Russia’s Investigative Committee in region says it opened criminal case after incident

ISTANBUL (AA) - At least one person was killed and 67 people were injured on Thursday after two trams collided in Russia’s Kemerovo region.

“According to the Kuzbass Center for Disaster Medicine, as of 10:40 a.m. (0340GMT), a total of 67 people were injured,” Kemerovo Governor Ilya Seredyuk said on Telegram.

Seredyuk said that three of those injured are in serious condition, while two others are in intensive care, of which one is at an operating room.

Kemerovo Mayor Dmitry Anisimov later reported on Telegram that one of those being treated died, adding that he would meet with the relatives of the deceased and provide support to the family.

Russia’s Investigative Committee in the Kemerovo region announced in a statement that it opened a criminal case after the incident.

It said the incident took place at 7.30 a.m. (0030GMT) when two trams collided, initially resulting in 30 people being injured.

“An investigative team went to the scene of the incident to establish the circumstances of the incident and carry out urgent investigative actions,” it added.
