10 bodies recovered after Israeli army withdraws from southeastern Gaza City

Search underway for more victims killed during Israeli army's incursion into Al-Zaytoun neighborhood, says official

GAZA CITY, Palestine (AA) - The Palestinian Civil Defense teams on Wednesday recovered 10 bodies of Palestinians killed during a week-long Israeli army's incursion into the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in southeastern Gaza City.

Speaking to Anadolu, Gaza Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal said the rescue teams have so far recovered 10 corpses of Palestinians killed in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood and its health clinic.

"Our teams are working in the neighborhood to search for victims killed during the Israeli army's incursion," he said.

Eyewitnesses told Anadolu that the Israeli army withdrew from the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood and its surrounding areas, leaving behind widescale destruction.

On May 9, the Israeli army started a military operation in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood, the second military operation in the area since Oct. 7.

Thousands of Palestinians were forced to flee their areas amid the Israeli army's attacks and bombing.

Israel has waged a brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip in retaliation for an Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack, which killed 1,200 people.

More than 35,100 Palestinians have since been killed in Gaza, mostly women and children, and over 79,000 others injured, according to Palestinian health authorities.

In the West Bank, nearly 500 Palestinians have been killed and thousands injured since Oct. 7, along with daily arrest campaigns by the Israeli army.

Israel is accused of “genocide” at the International Court of Justice, which has ordered Tel Aviv to ensure its forces do not commit acts of genocide and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.
