LUSAKA, Zambia (AA) - Fourteen inmates fled from a Zambian prison, with an officer manning the facility found unconscious in a pool of blood, authorities said on Sunday.
In a statement from Lusaka, the capital, Zambia police service deputy spokesman Godfrey Chilabi said the incident occurred at Nchelenge police station, approximately 965 kilometers (600 miles) north of Lusaka.
"Upon inspection, the cell door was found open and the 14 who were in lawful custody had escaped. Additionally, three motorcycles that were kept as exhibits were stolen," Chilabi said.
He added that Sergeant Frank Phiri was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to head injuries. His body will undergo a postmortem at the medical facility’s morgue.
"So far, three of the 14 have been recaptured and interrogations are underway. A manhunt has been launched for the 11 suspects that remain at large," he added.
