KIGALI, Rwanda (AA) – At least 17 people were killed in a mass shooting targeting two homesteads in a village in South Africa, police said on Saturday.
The incident occurred in the town of Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape province late Friday, targeting two homesteads.
“In one house, 13 people were killed which include 12 women and one man. In another homestead, four people were also killed,” police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said in a statement.
Police have "launched an extensive search to bring those responsible for these brutal killings to justice. We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of our communities.”
Police said the eighteenth victim was admitted in hospital in a critical condition, adding that in total 15 women and two men were killed.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane strongly condemned the attack as “senseless acts of violence.”
“The loss of life on this scale is a devastating blow to our province, and we mourn the passing of these innocent lives. We stand in solidarity with the families and communities affected,” said Mabuyane.
Local media indicated the victims were relatives and neighbors who had gathered to prepare for a traditional funeral ceremony for their relative.
South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world, according to the latest data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
