2 female climbers found dead in northern Iran's mountains: Officials

3 climbers went missing Friday in Sabalan Mountain

TEHRAN (AA) - At least two mountain climbers have been declared dead in the mountains of northwestern Iran after an extensive search operation, officials said Saturday.

Three female climbers from northwestern Tabriz city had gone missing Friday while trekking in the snow-clad Sabalan Mountain -- one of the three largest mountains in Ardabil province.

Officials said the climbers lost their way due to "unfavorable weather conditions," after which rescue teams were activated, and managed to find the bodies in early Saturday.

The third climber survived and was administered first aid, however, her condition is believed to be critical.

Sabalan is the third-highest mountain in Iran after Damavand and Alamkuh, with an altitude of 4,800 meters (15,784 feet).

The semi-official Mehr News Agency cited Shahram Mohammadi, the governor of Meshginshahr in Ardabil province, who said the bodies had been moved to base camp.

The rescue operation by two specialized teams, he said, had to be delayed late Friday amid inclement weather and was resumed early Saturday.

Two climbers died on the mountains of Oshtorankun in western Iran's Lorestan province after an avalanche in November.

Mountains in northern Iran are covered with snow at this time of year, which makes it challenging for climbers.
