2 killed after avalanche hit skiers in Japan
Incident takes place on Mt. Yotei that stands at 1,898 meters

ANKARA(AA) – At least two people were killed after an avalanche hit a group of backcountry skiers on a mountain in northern Japan on Monday, said a report.
The incident occurred on Mt. Yotei, located in the northernmost Hokkaido region, renowned for its ski areas, Tokyo-based Kyodo News reported.
The deceased are reported to be foreigners.
Rescue authorities responded to a call reporting that a group of six skiers had been struck by an avalanche on Mt. Yotei, which stands at 1,898 meters (6,227 feet) and spans towns including Kutchan and Niseko.
The avalanche hit three people of the party on the northern slope, slightly above the middle point between the peak and the foot of the mountain.
The three survivors managed to return from the mountain.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency's Sapporo Regional Headquarters, there was no avalanche alert in effect for Mt. Yotei around the time of the disaster.
