2 killed in deadly mudslide in Japan’s Kagoshima: Media

Local authority orders evacuation for more than 800,000 in Kagoshima, Kyodo reports

ANKARA (AA) - More landslides and flooding might follow Thursday’s downpours in southwestern Japan, according to the Japanese meteorology agency’s forecasts, as possible heavy rain and lightning strike eastern part of the country, Kyodo News reported.

An 80-year-old woman who lived alone became second victim in Soo city of Kagoshima after mud buried her house, Kyodo reported.

Another elderly woman’s house was engulfed by landslide after a torrential rain in Kagoshima City, capital of Kagoshima Prefecture.

The Prefecture ordered earlier Thursday to evacuate over 800,000 residents in the Prefecture, Kyodo said.

The city saw a record 421 millimeters of rain (the height of the water that cover per square meter) on Wednesday, the highest since 1977 when data was first recorded.

The evacuation order, however, was lifted in neighboring Miyazaki Prefecture, the Kyodo cited the prefectural government.

More downpour was expected in 24 hours on Kagoshima's Tanegashima and Yakushima islands hit east coastal area of Japan, Kyodo cited meteorology agency.
