2 Polish teens test positive for dengue fever after trip abroad

One teen has been discharged, other in hospital in good condition

LONDON (AA) - Two Polish teens who recently traveled to tropical countries tested positive for dengue fever, according to media reports Tuesday.

The teens were admitted to John Paul II Specialist Hospital in Krakow, where rapid tests confirmed the mosquito-borne viral infection, TVP World reported, citing Polsat News.

One of the teens has been discharged, while the other is still in the hospital in good condition.

Hospital officials said the infections were linked to recent travel abroad, stressing that dengue is not transmitted from person to person but only through bites from infected mosquitoes.

The World Health Organization said dengue is a viral infection caused by the dengue virus (DENV), which is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes.

Dengue is found in tropical and sub-tropical climates, mostly in urban and semi-urban areas.

Most people with dengue have mild or no symptoms and will get better in one to two weeks. Rarely, dengue can be severe and lead to death, said the WHO.
