280,000 Syrian refugees estimated to return home since fall of Assad regime: UN refugee chief

GENEVA (AA) - The UN refugee agency chief on Tuesday said the agency estimates that 280,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their homes since the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024.

More than 800,000 people were displaced inside the country also have returned, Filippo Grandi said on X.

"Early recovery efforts must be bolder and faster, though, otherwise people will leave again: this is now urgent!" Grandi said.

Assad fled to Russia as anti-regime groups took control of Damascus, and Ahmed al-Sharaa was appointed as the country's president in late January.
