ATHENS (AA) – At least three firemen were injured while fighting wildfires in Greece’s southern province Corinthia, public broadcaster ERT reported on Wednesday.
The fire that started this afternoon in the town of Sofiko quickly expanded owing to the extreme heat despite the best efforts of the fire fighters.
The firefighters, supported by 37 types of heavy vehicles including earthmovers and fire engines, and 11 aerial vehicles, are still struggling to control the fire.
The flames are burning on two major fronts, but do not pose threat to settlements in the area.
Meanwhile, the Civil Protection Ministry issued very high risk of fire advisory for most of the country for Wednesday and Thursday owing to the extreme heat.
The regions of Attica, which includes Athens and the adjacent port city of Piraeus, Peloponnese, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Northern Aegean, Western Greece and Crete are under high risk.
