Resurgence of intense clashes between Sudanese army, Rapid Support Forces leaves civilian areas in Omdurman under fire

By Adel Abdelrheem

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) — Artillery shelling by paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan killed at least three people on Thursday, also injuring 14 west of the capital Khartoum.

The Ministry of Health in Khartoum confirmed that the victims in residential areas of neighboring Omdurman city were treated at the public Al-Nau Hospital. However, it noted that the total number of casualties may be higher as many injured may not have reached the hospital.

This attack comes amid renewed fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and RSF after a brief lull in hostilities over the course of recent weeks.

The shelling in Omdurman follows a surge in violent clashes that erupted in Khartoum on Monday, marking an escalation in the civil war that has ravaged the country since mid-April 2023.

The ongoing conflict has caused widespread devastation across Sudan, with over 18,800 people reported dead and nearly 10 million displaced, according to the UN.

The fighting has spread to 13 of Sudan’s 18 states, prompting urgent international appeals for an end to the violence, as the country teeters on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe with millions at risk of famine due to food shortages exacerbated by the war.

As of now, the RSF has not issued a statement in response to the statement made by the Ministry of Health.
