BAGHDAD (AA) - Four Iraqi soldiers were killed and three others injured on Wednesday in an attack by Daesh/ISIS terrorists in Kirkuk province, northern Iraq, the country’s Interior Ministry said.
In a statement, ministry spokesperson Muqdad Miri said: “At 10:00 a.m. (local time) Wednesday, an intelligence unit from the 42nd Brigade of the 11th Division was ambushed during a reconnaissance and search mission in the Zgaytun Valley, within the Kirkuk Operations Command zone.”
“The ambush resulted in the deaths of four soldiers and injuries to three others of varying severity,” he added.
Miri also noted that “reinforcements were sent, and the terrorist group has been surrounded,” adding that “a commission of inquiry has been formed to investigate the incident.”
Daesh/ISIS had taken control of Mosul, Salah al-Din, and Al Anbar provinces, as well as parts of Diyala and Kirkuk, in June 2014. These areas were reclaimed in the following years.
Former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over the group on Dec. 9, 2017.
Although seven years have passed since Daesh/ISIS was driven out of Iraq, the group continues to launch attacks in rural areas of several provinces.
