4 killed as Yemeni security chief survives attack in Aden

Car-bomb explosion targets Lahij security chief

By Shukri Hussein
SANAA, Yemen (AA) – A senior security official survived an assassination attempt in Yemen’s southern city of Aden on Wednesday, according to a local security source.

A car-bomb explosion targeted the convoy of Lahij security chief, Bri. Saleh al-Sayyid, on a road leading to Aden airport, the source said.

The security official emerged unhurt from the attack, while four of his guards were killed, the source added on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

A number of guards were also injured.

There was no claim of responsibility for the attack.

Aden, Yemen's temporary capital, has witnessed a host of attacks and kidnappings of government officials since Houthi rebels were expelled from the city in July 2015.

Yemen has been engulfed by violence and instability since September 2014, when Iranian-aligned Houthi rebels captured much of the country, including the capital Sanaa. A military coalition led by Saudi Arabia entered the war in early 2015 to restore the Yemeni government to power.

The eight-year conflict has created one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with millions suffering from hunger.
