40 judges infected with coronavirus in Bangladesh

Death toll from COVID-19 rises to 1,968, total cases surpass 156,300, according to official data

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AA) - A total of 40 judges in Bangladesh have been infected by the coronavirus since the first case reported in the South Asian country on March 8, according to official data.

Md Saifur Rahman, a spokesman of Bangladesh Supreme Court, told Anadolu Agency that 181 more staff in the judiciary have also tested positive for the virus.

He added that all the 40 infected judges belonged to subordinate courts across the country.

Among the other infected staff, 45 are from the Supreme Court and 136 are from the lower courts.

“To date, one sitting judge has died of the coronavirus, while one is being treated in hospital; 21 are at home quarantine and the rest 17 have recovered from the disease,” Rahman added.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the coronavirus in the country rose to 1,968, with 42 new fatalities over the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s latest data.

The total number of cases has surged to 156,391, with 3,114 new cases reported over the past 24 hours.
