HAMILTON, Canada (AA) - Police in the US state of South Carolina issued a warning Thursday after 43 rhesus macaque monkeys escaped from a research facility in the town of Yemassee.
The primates broke free from the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center, prompting police to urge residents to secure their doors and windows, according to media reports.
The Yemassee Police Department in a statement said the monkeys, all young females, had never been used in testing due to their age.
No captures had been made by early afternoon local time, although Alpha Genesis has set traps and is using thermal imaging cameras to locate them.
"Alpha Genesis currently have eyes on the primates and are working to entice them with food," said the police.
Describing the animals as "skittish," police said "residents are urged to keep their doors and windows securely closed and to report any sightings immediately by dialing 911."
