61 migrants dead after boat sinks off Libya’s coast: Tobruk: UN refugee agency

ISTANBUL (AA) – A boat carrying 74 migrants capsized off Libya’s coast, leaving 61 migrants dead, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Wednesday.

UNHCR said only 13 people survived after their boat sank off the coast of Tobruk in northeastern Libya on Sept. 13, while 61 others went missing.

It said all the victims were Sudanese, offering condolences to the families of all those affected by “this painful tragedy.”

“A real solution lies in ending the war in Sudan so families can return home safely without having to undertake such dangerous journeys,” it said.

Since mid-April 2023, Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been fighting a war that numerous regional and international mediations have failed to end, despite the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the country.
