NEW DELHI (AA) – Nine trekkers were killed in the Indian Himalayan state of Uttarakhand after being caught in bad weather, officials said on Wednesday.
Superintendent of police in Uttarkashi district, Arpan Yadav, confirmed the death toll to Anadolu, saying five bodies had so far been recovered. “Four others would be brought down tomorrow,” he added.
Officials said a group of 22 people were trekking from Uttarkashi, but lost their way on return because of unsuitable weather.
Yadav said a rescue operation was launched after they received information on Tuesday.
He said among the 22 team members, 19 were from Karnataka and Maharashtra states, and three local guides.
State’s Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s office wrote on X that Indian air force teams were among the agencies currently engaged in rescue operations.
