95 Libyan nationals arrested in South Africa at suspected ‘secret military camp’

By Hassan Isilow

JOHANNESBURG (AA) – South African police arrested 95 Libyan nationals on Friday at a suspected "secret military camp" in White River, a small holiday town in Mpumalanga province.

In a statement, police accused the Libyans of violating the country's immigration laws.

According to police spokesman Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the individuals allegedly misrepresented their intentions on visa applications, claiming they were in South Africa for security guard training.

However, police suspect they were receiving military training.

Authorities have not released additional information about the arrests. They stated that the raid was conducted based on intelligence information.

Video footage shown on national television displayed green tents where the Libyan nationals were staying.
