Activists in Brazil place empty plates to urge global leaders to take action on hunger

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AA) - Human rights activists placed 733 empty plates on Copacabana Beach to represent the 733 million people suffering from hunger worldwide ahead of a G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.

The symbolic protest, organized by civil society groups aimed to draw attention to global hunger and urge world leaders to take action.

Inspired by Brazilian sociologist and activist Betinho de Souza’s words "Hunger can’t wait," the plates, each marked with a red cross, aimed to highlight the urgency of the crisis.

Rio will host the G20 summit on Nov. 18–19, where leaders from 19 major economies, EU and the African Union will convene under the theme: "Construction of a just world and a sustainable planet."

Citizens joined the protest in the most-lively spot in the city, to extend their support to the movement.
