ISTANBUL (AA) – Afghan interim Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi met with US Hostage Affairs Envoy Adam Boehler and former US Special Envoy Zalmay Khalilzad on Saturday in Kabul to discuss American detainees in Afghanistan, the Foreign Ministry said.
The meeting also addressed strengthening bilateral relations, investment, and the situation of citizens of both countries, according to a ministry statement.
Both sides agreed to maintain communication on key issues, particularly the detainees held in the US and Afghanistan.
Muttaqi, referring to earlier Doha meetings, said the current period offered a good time to normalize relations, stressing that there are no “complex problems in bilateral relations that can’t be solved.”
The US delegation conveyed goodwill and a commitment to build on previous talks. It said Washington “respects the nations’ freedom of choice and does not intend to impose anything on Afghans.”
The Taliban-led interim administration has released several foreigners, mostly Americans, since returning to power in August 2021.
