Africa Climate Week postponed because of coronavirus

Meeting postponed, not canceled, says UN climate body

By Burak Bir

ANKARA (AA) - The UN’s climate body postponed Friday the forthcoming Africa Climate Week 2020 amid growing concerns about coronavirus.

The UN Climate Change, said the five-day meeting slated for the end of April in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, was delayed in line with advice from the UN Department of Safety and Security.

"The UN Climate Change secretariat, in close collaboration with all the other organizing partners, has decided to put Africa Climate Week in Kampala on hold. This is to ensure the health and safety of all participants in light of the Coronavirus (COVID-19)," it said.

Regional Climate Week (RCW), which includes a series of events, was postponed, but not canceled, and will take place at a later date yet to be determined.

"Uganda will remain the host country, and preparations will continue to ensure the best possible results of the meeting," the agency said.

RCWs inspire individuals and organizations to become part of the momentum created by the global climate agreement in Paris.

Every year, RCWs are held in Africa, Latin-America, the Caribbean and Asia-Pacific.

As of 2020, events will also be convened in the Middle East and the Northern African region.
