African Union condemns ‘coup attempt’ in Gambia
Economic Community of West African States also voices solidarity with government of President Adama Barrow

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AA) - The head of the African Union Commission on Thursday condemned in “strongest terms” the “attempted coup” in Gambia, a West African country.
“The Chairperson reaffirms the continued and unwavering support of the African Union to the government and people of the Gambia”, Moussa Faki Mahamat said in a statement.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) also issued a statement to express solidarity with government.
“ECOWAS Commission stands firmly by the democratically elected government of the Gambia and once again reiterates its total condemnation of the attempted coup plot”, the regional organization said in a statement.
On Wednesday, the Gambian government said that, based on intelligence reports, some soldiers of the Gambian army were “plotting to overthrow the democratically elected government” of President Adama Barrow. Four soldiers were arrested in a “swift operation” conducted on Tuesday.
