BRUSSELS/ISTANBUL (AA) – An agreement to form a new government in Belgium has been reached after more than seven months following the June 2024 elections.
In a post on X, the Belgian Royal Palace announced Saturday that Bart De Wever, tasked with forming the government, informed King Philippe during a meeting late Friday that a deal had been struck in the coalition negotiations.
The next step will involve agreeing on the names to form the new cabinet, which will then be submitted to the King for approval. Once the King signs the decrees to appoint the new ministers, the government will be sworn in.
On the same day, the new Prime Minister will present the government and coalition agreement to the Bundestag, and the government will officially take office.
Until then, the current Prime Minister, Alexander de Croo, will remain in office.
No agreement had been reached earlier to form a new government following the June elections.
