American Civil Liberties Union files lawsuit against Trump’s order to end birthright citizenship
'We will not let this attack on newborns and future generations of Americans go unchallenged,' says executive director

WASHINTON (AA) - The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) sued the Trump administration for its executive order that seeks to strip certain babies born in the US of their American citizenship.
"Denying citizenship to U.S.-born children is not only unconstitutional — it’s also a reckless and ruthless repudiation of American values. Birthright citizenship is part of what makes the United States the strong and dynamic nation that it is. This order seeks to repeat one of the gravest errors in American history, by creating a permanent subclass of people born in the U.S. who are denied full rights as Americans," Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the ACLU, said in a statement late Monday.
It came shortly after President Donald Trump signed an executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship.
During his inaugural speech earlier Monday, Trump said he would invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to use the full and immense power of federal and state law enforcement to eradicate foreign gangs and criminals from US soil.
Romero said: "We will not let this attack on newborns and future generations of Americans go unchallenged. The Trump administration's overreach is so egregious that we are confident we will ultimately prevail."
Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib from the state of Michigan said the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified 157 years ago.
"Trump cannot just override our Constitution with an executive order. The president does not have the authority to end birthright citizenship," she said.
