Amnesty report 'conclusive evidence' of Israeli genocide in Gaza: Palestinian politician

Amnesty says it found ‘sufficient basis to conclude that Israel has committed and is continuing to commit genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.’

RAMALLAH, Palestine (AA) – A Palestinian politician has hailed a report by rights group Amnesty International as “conclusive evidence” of Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The London-based group accused Israel early Thursday of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

The report "proves with evidence that Israel continues to commit the crime of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza over the past 14 months,” Mustafa Barghouti, the head of the National Initiative Movement, said in a statement.

He said the Amnesty report also makes countries supplying Israel with weapons complicit in the Gaza genocide.

"This objective report should motivate the International Court of Justice to expedite its proceedings (in the South African case) regarding the crime of genocide that is taking place in Gaza,” Barghouti said.

The Palestinian politician called for an immediate halt of weapons to Israel and imposing sanctions on Tel Aviv “until it stops the genocide and takes full responsibility for its actions.”

Amnesty said that it has found “sufficient basis to conclude that Israel has committed and is continuing to commit genocide against Palestinians in Gaza."

Israel launched a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip following an attack by Hamas in October 2023, killing nearly 44,600 people, most of them women and children, and injuring over 105,700.

The second year of the genocide in Gaza has drawn growing international condemnation, with officials and institutions denouncing the attacks and blocking of aid deliveries as a deliberate attempt to destroy the population.

Last month, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its deadly war on Gaza.
