RAMALLAH, Palestine (AA) – Another Palestinian detainee died in Israeli detention, bringing the death toll of prisoners in Israeli jails to three in a week, prisoners’ affairs groups said on Monday.

Khaled Mahmoud Abdullah, 40, from the West Bank city of Jenin, died in the Israeli Megiddo Prison facility in northern Israel, the Commission of Detainees’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner Society said in a joint statement.

Abdullah, a father of four, was detained by the Israeli forces on Nov. 9, 2023, and died in prison on Feb. 25, 2025. He was never charged.

His family said that Abdullah had not suffered any health problems before his detention.

Abdullah had two brothers, who are still languishing in Israeli prisons without charge under Israel’s notorious policy of administrative detention.

According to Palestinian figures, at least 61 Palestinian detainees have died in Israeli detention since October 2023, including 40 from Gaza.

Palestinian authorities estimate that at least 298 Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli prisons since Tel Aviv’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza in 1967.

At least 10,000 Palestinians remain in Israeli prisons. The figure does not include those arrested from the Gaza Strip whose numbers are estimated to be in the thousands.

A ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement took effect in Gaza on Jan. 19, halting Israel’s brutal war that has killed nearly 48,400 Palestinians, most of them women and children, and left the enclave in ruins.

Israel, however, halted the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza on Sunday, hours after the expiry of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement.

In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its military campaign.
