Another suspect detained in France over attack plans in lead up to Olympics
Arrest follows detention of 18-year-old suspect Tuesday for similar reasons
French authorities have detained an 18-year-old suspect in the southern province of Gironde on suspicion of planning an attack in the lead-up to the Olympic Games.
The arrest follows the detention of another 18-year-old on Tuesday for similar reasons.
The French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) said the newest suspect was apprehended shortly before the opening ceremony which is scheduled for Friday.
It disclosed that the suspect is accused of plotting one or more attacks.
No details have been provided, however, on if the plans were directly linked to Olympic events.
The recent detentions come amid heightened security measures as France gears up to host the Summer Games which is expected to draw nearly 16 million visitors.
Authorities are on high alert against potential threats and to ensure the safety of athletes, spectators and residents.
Media reports indicate that the suspect had been in face-to-face contact and through social media with the other suspect who was arrested July 23.
The PNAT confirmed that the suspects’ attack plans are currently under thorough investigation.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin suggested to French broadcaster, BFMTV, that there is a possibility that the initial suspect's plans might be connected to the Olympic Games.
He emphasized the government's commitment to maintaining strict security protocols during the Games.
