ISTANBUL (AA) - Argentine and Paraguay announced their support for Israel on Saturday following Iran’s drone attack against Israel.

Argentine President Javier Milei underlined the country’s solidarity with Israel and its “'unwavering commitment” in a statement that condemned Iran and Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel.

“The Argentine Republic reaffirms the right of nation-states to defend themselves. We unequivocally support the sovereignty of the State of Israel.

“The State of Israel serves as the guardian of Western values in the Middle East. The Argentine Republic will always stand by Israel against those who seek to destroy it,” it said.

Paraguay President Santiago expressed the country’s “full support” for Israel “in such difficult times.”

“We see with concern the increase in violence in the region. We remain in contact with our embassies in the region to serve our compatriots,” he added.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro urged the UN to “meet urgently” and “immediately commit” to peace following Iran's retaliatory missile and drone strikes, prompted by a recent airstrike on its consulate in Syria.

Iran began an airborne attack Saturday against Israel in retaliation for an April 1 airstrike on its diplomatic facility in the Syrian capital. The strike killed at least seven members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including two top generals.

Tehran has accused Israel of carrying out the attack and vowed to respond. Tel Aviv has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack but it has for months carried out several strikes against Iranian targets across Syria.

Iran and Hezbollah, its main ally in Lebanon, have said the attack will not go unpunished.
