ISTANBUL (AA) - Armenia will participate in the protection of the country’s border with neighboring Türkiye and Iran as of next year, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
Nazeli Baghdasaryan said in a statement on Facebook that Pashinyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during an earlier meeting in Moscow, agreed on the participation of Armenian border guards in the protection of the country’s border with Türkiye and Iran starting from Jan, 1, 2025.
Baghdasaryan said services at the Armenian-Iranian border will also be carried out entirely by the border guards.
She added that Pashinyan thanked Putin for the services rendered by the Russian border guards at the Armenian-Iranian border since Yerevan's independence.
Since 1992, the protection of Armenia’s border with Türkiye and Iran has been carried out by Russia’s Border Service.
In August, Armenian border guards also began their work at the Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan, where Russian border guards were present under an agreement between the two countries signed in 1992.
