Asia-Pacific news group demands protection of journalists in Gaza

ISTANBUL (AA) - A major alliance of news agencies sought protection Thursday for reporters to work in the conflict zone amid attacks on journalists reporting on the armed conflict in Gaza between Israel and Palestinian groups.

The Organization Of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) said the conflict has “reached a level that threatens the safety of journalists in the region.”

“As journalists, we have been the target of grave violence for simply conducting our journalistic duty with great devotion despite all the difficulties we face,” it said in a statement.

OANA said it considers the “sanctity of their lives indispensable,” as it reaffirmed its commitment to fight for the safety and security of all journalists. “There is no excuse for being victimized by such an action which is also truly breaching human rights and international law.”

At least 19 journalists were among the more than 5,100 dead on both sides since the war began Oct. 7, according to Committee to Protect Journalists.

OANA urged all institutions and organizations “to take the highest measures to ensure the safety of journalists.”

At least 3,785 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, the Palestinian Health Ministry said Thursday.

It said more than 12,000 people have been injured.

The ministry put the Palestinian death toll in the occupied West Bank at 69, while 1,300 others were injured.

More than 1,400 Israelis have also been killed.

Israel has launched non-stop airstrikes on the Gaza Strip after Hamas attacked Israeli border towns.

Gaza is experiencing a dire humanitarian crisis, with no electricity, while water, food, fuel, and medical supplies are running out.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” to ease the “epic human suffering.”
