At least 1 killed, 57 injured in Ukraine’s capital, Kharkiv in Russian airstrikes

ISTANBUL (AA) - At least one person was killed and 57 others were injured in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and Kharkiv in Russian airstrikes on Tuesday, a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Ukraine’s Saturday attack on Belgorod would not go “unpunished.”

“So far, 16 people have been injured in a multi-story building in the Solomianskyi district, which caught fire as a result of a rocket attack.” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram, adding that 15 of them have been hospitalized.

Klitschko reported in earlier statements that there are fires in several places in the Podilskyi district, as well as a fire at a warehouse in the Obolonskyi district and a supermarket in the Desnianskyi district.

“In Sviatoshynskyi (district), a social infrastructure building was hit. In Pecherskyi (district), the roof of a high-rise building was hit … Emergency services are working everywhere,” he added.

Ukraine’s private energy provider DTEK reported that electricity in parts of Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi, Svyatoshynskyi, Holosiivskyi, Podilskyi and Obolonskyi districts have been cut off. There is also a power outage in Buchanskyi and Vyshhorodskyi districts of the broader Kyiv region, it added.

“As soon as the security situation allows, we will definitely restore electricity to everyone. Believe in energy workers and air defense,” DTEK said.

Separately, Kharkiv Governor Oleh Synyehubov reported on Telegram that Russian missile strikes in the central part of the city killed one person and injured 41 people.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Air Force claimed that it shot down 35 Russian drones launched on Ukraine from Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia’s Krasnodar region and Crimea, which Moscow illegally annexed in 2014.

Reacting to a Ukrainian attack on the city of Belgorod on Saturday which killed at least 25 people, Putin said on Monday that Russia will not let “a single crime of this kind” go “unpunished.”
