WASHINGTON (AA) - At least 18 people were killed and 13 injured in a mass shooting in the US state of Maine, Gov. Janet Mill said at a news conference Thursday.

Eight victims who died in in Lewiston late Wednesday have been identified while 10 are still pending identification, said William G. Ross from Maine State Police.

Police are searching for a person of interest, Robert Card, 40, in connection with two mass shootings at the Sparetime Recreation bowling alley and the Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant, said officials.

They urged residents in Lewiston and Lisbon to shelter in place.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office shared images of an individual armed with an assault rifle.

The Lewiston Police Department said Card "should be considered armed and dangerous. Please contact law enforcement if you are aware of his whereabouts.”

Us President Joe Biden has been briefed and offered full support in the wake of "this horrific attack" during a telephone call with Mills, senators Angus King and Susan Collins, and congressman Jared Golden, according to the White House.

Public schools in Lewiston are closed Thursday.
