At least 37 deaths reported in Nepal earthquake

ANKARA (AA) - At least 37 people were killed and many others injured when a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal late Friday.

Officials said the quake, centered 42 kilometers (26 miles) south of Nepal's Jumla region, resulted in the deaths of 20 victims in the Rukum region and the destruction of homes.

Another 17 were killed in the Jajarkot region, and search and rescue operations continue in mountainous areas.

The death toll is expected to rise in the morning, with villages losing communication, said officials.

The Nepal National Seismological Center measured the earthquake's magnitude as 6.4 but the United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured it at 5.6.

The India National Seismology Center (NCS) had previously reported on Facebook that the quake had a magnitude of 6.4 and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The Indian ANI News agency noted tremors were felt in the New Delhi region and northern India.
