ATHENS (AA) – Athens city council adopted a resolution calling for immediate ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon, local media reported on Thursday.
The resolution responds to the appeal by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on Oct.25 regarding the unfolding humanitarian disaster in Gaza, which particularly warns of risk of starvation, and corresponds to petition by thousands of citizens and politicians, said the In.gr news outlet.
Accordingly, it calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and de-escalation in Lebanon as well as other parts in the Middle East.
The resolution also calls on the conservative Greek government to refrain from any act of cooperation that could contribute to the extension of the war, the worsening of the humanitarian crisis and the loss of human lives of civilians and take initiative for securing a ceasefire.
In a Facebook post, the Palestinian Community Greece thanked to the city council and said, “Athens becomes the first European capital whose municipal council votes for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and Lebanon and for the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza".
