Australia premier calls social media giant 'arrogant, out of touch'

Remarks by Anthony Albanese comes in wake of Meta global safety chief telling lawmakers social media does not harm children

ANKARA (AA) — Australia's prime minister on Saturday criticized social media giant Meta, calling it "arrogant and out of touch."

Anthony Albanese's remarks came after Antigone Davis, Meta's head of global safety told a parliamentary inquiry in Canberra that she didn't think social media had harmed Children, SBS News reported, citing AAP.

"Meta are showing how out of touch they are and how arrogant they are," the agency quoted the Albenese as saying of the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.

Australian Parliament is conducting an inquiry into possible harm to young children caused by social media.

When lawmakers asked Davis how much of an impact social media had on young people's mental health, she said issues of teen mental health are complex and affected by multiple factors.

"I don't think social media has done harm to our children," she said via video link, proposing that her company should launch age-verification systems.
