Bahrain jails six for ‘military training’ in Iran, Iraq

MANAMA (AA) – A Bahraini court on Tuesday slapped six people with jail terms of varying length after convicting them of having undergone “military training" in Iran and Iraq.

According to the Bahraini News Agency, Manama’s Supreme Criminal Court sentenced two of the six to 25 years each in jail, two others to five years each, and one to seven years behind bars.

The news agency did not provide any more detail except to say that the sentences can still be appealed.

The six were convicted earlier for travelling to Iran and Iraq in 2017 and 2018, where they reportedly received military training “with a view to committing terrorist acts upon their return to Bahrain”.

The defendants were also reportedly convicted of “associating with terrorist elements”.

It remains unclear until now what parties or groups provided the alleged military training in Iran and Iraq.
