Belgian city imposes daytime alcohol ban in city center

Ban in Boom aims to prevent public disturbances; violators face fines

By Melike Pala

BRUSSELS (AA) - The Belgian city of Boom has imposed a daytime alcohol ban in its city center from April through September to reduce public disturbances, broadcaster VRT reported Friday.

During this period, consuming alcohol will be prohibited in and around the Grote Markt, the historic market square, at all times.

Previously, public drinking outside licensed areas was only banned from midnight to 8 a.m., except for permitted terraces and events.

Mayor Jeroen Baert said the measure targets areas where alcohol-related nuisance has occurred.

“We chose this period because the days are longer and the chances of good weather increase. It is especially then that people gather in the areas where we want to take action,” he explained.

Violators may face fines under the municipal administrative sanctions code.

Authorities clarified that carrying an open bottle or can of alcohol will also be considered a breach of the ban.
