Bezymianny volcano in Russia’s Kamchatka shows signs of major eruption

Ash explosions could pose risk to international and low-flying aircraft

İSTANBUL (AA) – The Bezymianny volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula is showing signs of a major eruption, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team reported Monday.

The aviation color code for the volcano has been raised to “orange” due to intensified activity, the team said.

“Effusive activity of the volcano is gradually increasing. This is accompanied by powerful gas-steam emissions and hot avalanches,” volcanologists said, adding that satellite data showed “a large thermal anomaly over the volcano in recent days with a high temperature difference between the anomaly and the background.”

Scientists warned that ash explosions reaching heights of 10–15 kilometers could occur at any time, posing a danger to international and low-flying aircraft.

No ash clouds have been recorded so far, according to KVERT.

Bezymianny last experienced a powerful eruption on July 25, 2024, when ash fallout was reported in nearby villages of Atlasovo and Lazo.
