Biden announces $140M funding for artificial intelligence institutes across US

ISTANBUL (AA) - US President Joe Biden's administration announced Thursday $140 million in funding to launch seven new artificial intelligence (AI) research institutes across the nation.

The administration also unveiled an independent commitment from leading AI developers, including Anthropic, Alphabet's parent firm Google, Hugging Face, Microsoft, NVIDIA, OpenAI, and Stability AI, to participate in a public evaluation of AI systems.

While the investment will bring the total number of AI research institutes to 25 across the nation, it will also extend the network of organizations involved into nearly every US state, according to a statement by the White House.

A number of tech experts, including billionaire Elon Musk, in a letter in late March called for a pause on AI experiments and systems, citing risks to society and humanity.

"The Administration is also actively working to address the national security concerns raised by AI, especially in critical areas like cybersecurity, biosecurity, and safety," the statement said.

"This includes enlisting the support of government cybersecurity experts from across the national security community to ensure leading AI companies have access to best practices, including protection of AI models and networks," it added.
