Biden says he intends to visit US-Mexico border next week

WASHINGTON (AA) - US President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he intends to visit the US-Mexico border during his trip to Mexico City next week.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is hosting the North American Leaders' Summit on Monday and Tuesday, where he will meet with Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Biden made the remarks before heading to the state of Kentucky to discuss his economic plan to revitalize struggling communities. He was joined by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and other officials.

"That’s my intention. We’re working out the details now," Biden told reporters when asked if he would be traveling to the border.

It will be first time for Biden to do so since taking office as president.

The Democratic president has long been criticized by Republicans for not visiting the border, which has seen a massive influx of migrants in recent years.

In one instance, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has in recent months bussed many migrants to Democratic-controlled cities including Washington, D.C. and New York as well as the home of Vice President Kamala Harris.
