NEW DELHI (AA) — At least four people died while dozens others were injured after rainstorm winds knocked over a billboard in India's financial capital Mumbai, officials said on Monday.
The billboard in the Chheda Nagar area of Mumbai's eastern Ghatkopar suburb "collapsed" on Monday evening due to the strong winds, according to initial updates released by Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
It said the billboard fell on nearby dwellings and a gas station, with more than 100 people "likely trapped" after the incident.
A statement issued by the corporation said later that four people had died in the incident, while 43 people are still in the hospital. A total of 31 others admitted earlier were discharged after treatment, it said.
Devendra Fadnavis, deputy chief minister of Maharashtra state, wrote on X that a high-level probe was ordered into the incident, vowing strict action against those responsible.
Fadnavis, who visited and inspected the scene of the incident, said relief and rescue operations are underway.
