HAMILTON, Canada (AA) - US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to travel to Jordan's Aqaba and Ankara from Dec. 11 - 13, for high-level discussions on key developments across the Middle East, according to the State Department.

"In Aqaba and Ankara, Secretary Blinken will meet with leaders to discuss developments in Syria, Israel, Gaza, Lebanon, and across the region," it said.

Saying that Blinken will convey US' support for "an inclusive, Syrian-led transition to an accountable and representative government," the statement said that "he will discuss the need for the transition process and new government in Syria to respect the rights of minorities, facilitate the flow of humanitarian assistance, prevent Syria from being used as a base of terrorism or posing a threat to its neighbors, and ensure that chemical weapons stockpiles are secured and safely destroyed."

Blinken will also highlight US backing for displaced Syrians. "Access to protection for displaced individuals remains a priority during this transition period," it said.

In Ankara, Blinken will meet senior Turkish officials to discuss cooperation on shared priorities, including counterterrorism and regional stability.

"Türkiye is a valued NATO ally, and we are committed to deepening our collaboration to address pressing challenges," said the statement.

In both stops, Blinken will focus on regional crises, including the need for a cease-fire in Gaza that ensures the release of hostages and facilitates humanitarian aid for Palestinians.

Blinken will also advocate for the continued cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
