Bodies of 2 missing people recovered after landslide in northern Italy

ISTANBUL (AA) - Italian authorities recovered the bodies of two people who went missing after a landslide struck their home in the country’s flood-hit northeast, as severe weather continues to hamper rescue efforts, local media reported on Tuesday.

The landslide occurred in the town of Cormons in Gorizia province, where days of intense rainfall caused a section of hillside to collapse onto a residence.

Search teams located the first victim, a 32-year-old German national, according to Italy’s fire brigade, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

Italian firefighters have also recovered the body of an 83-year-old woman who went missing after a landslide destroyed her home in the village of Brazzano, in the municipality of Cormons.

The body of the victim, identified as Guerrina Skocaj, was located late Monday evening, but recovery operations were suspended for several hours due to severe weather conditions that made the site unsafe amid fears of further slope collapse, the fire brigade noted.

Northern Italy has been hit by days of heavy rainfall, triggering floods and landslides across several regions. Emergency crews remain on heightened alert as unstable weather continues to affect rescue and recovery operations.
