Bodycam footage show reveals new details on Trump assassination attempt

Trump's security cohort seen in communication mishap with local police officers

ISTANBUL (AA) — New bodycam footage revealed fresh details about the attempt on Donald Trump's life last month, US media reported on Friday.

The footage shows Butler Police officers, tactical units, and Secret Service forces advancing on the rooftop of the nearby building where shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, had fired shots at the former president and now-Republican nominee during a rally in the Pennsylvania town.

A police officer is heard stating that he had alerted the Secret Service of the need to cover the building days prior to the assassination attempt, yet no Secret Service personnel had been posted to the roof.

Miscommunications between local police and US Secret Service were highlighted as the source of the security breach by tactical units in the footage, which showed that Crooks had already been killed prior to the officers getting on the roof.

Gunshots are heard in the video, though the source was unclear.

In the incident that occurred on July 13, Trump was grazed in the right ear but remained otherwise unharmed, with the FBI later issuing a statement identifying Crooks as the suspected shooter.

The Secret Service in a separate statement said the shooter had fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside the venue. In addition to the shooter, one spectator died and two others were critically injured.

The incident occurred just days before Trump was to be nominated as Republican Party's presidential candidate for the 2024 election.
