Borsa Istanbul up at opening session

BIST 100 index rises nearly 9 points from previous close, Turkish lira gains ground

ISTANBUL (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index opened at 1,419.69 points on Thursday, up 0.63% or 8.82 points from the previous close.

At the midweek close, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index was down 1.85% to 1,410.87 points, with a daily trading volume of 16.4 billion Turkish liras ($1.9 billion).

After the Turkish and South Korean central banks announced a bilateral swap agreement this morning worth around $2 billion, the Turkish lira gained value against foreign currencies.

The US dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate dropped to 8.6030 as of 9.30 a.m. local time (0630GMT), versus 8.6580 at the previous close.

The euro/Turkish lira exchange rate also fell to 10.1140 from 10.1600, while one British pound traded for 11.9440 Turkish liras, down from 12.0100.

One barrel of Brent crude oil was sold for $71.30 as of 10 a.m. local time (0700GMT).

Later Thursday, the country's Central Bank will hold its eighth monetary policy meeting of 2021 to set interest rates.
