BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) – Two Balkan countries, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, on Thursday issued "red alerts" due to extreme heat in the region, warning the public to exercise caution.

The red alert indicates severe health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

The two countries' metrological offices said in separate statements that temperatures in many cities across Bosnia and Serbia could reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) at midday.

The Hydrometeorological Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina warned that scorching heat would persist throughout the week and advised caution.

According to Milan Jovanovic of the Serbian Institute of Public Health, the weather conditions in 10 cities across the country are "very dangerous."

Authorities also stated that extremely hot weather conditions are unfavorable for those with chronic diseases and that those with asthma and heart disease should exercise extra caution.

The Serbian Automobile and Motorcycle Association also advised drivers to be more careful in traffic and avoid driving during the hottest hours of the day.
