Brazil's unemployment falls to 6.9% in April-June period

Figure is lowest for a quarter ending in June since 2014, with employed population reaching a record 101.8 million, says statistical agency

ISTANBUL (AA) - Brazil's unemployment rate fell to 6.9% in the April-June period, according to data released Wednesday by the Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

This marks the lowest unemployment rate for a quarter ending in June since 2014 when it also stood at 6.9%, the IBGE said in a statement.

The figure aligns with market estimates, down from 7.9% in the January-March period.

Annually, the latest figure represents a 1.1 percentage point decrease from the April-June period of last year when it was 8%.

The number of unemployed people stood at 7.5 million in the three-month period ending in June, a decrease of 1.1 million from the same period in 2023, the IBGE reported.

The employed population reached 101.8 million in the April-June period, setting a new record in the series that began in 2012, it added.
