AGRI, Türkiye (AA) - A group of British mountaineers has dedicated their difficult ascent of a famed mountain in eastern Türkiye to the memory of Queen Elizabeth, the long-reigning monarch who passed away last week, aged 96.
The mountaineers started climbing Mount Agri – the biblical Mount Ararat in English – from the village of Cevirme under the guidance of Turkish mountaineering coach Mustafa Tekin, and managed to reach the summit despite a blizzard and freezing temperatures.
The group, whose eyebrows and eyelashes froze due to the biting cold, dedicated their success to Queen Elizabeth II after they learned of her death during their descent.
Tekin said that he had summited Mount Agri nearly 175 times.
"The climb started very well. As we got near the summit, it was freezing cold, especially at night," Tekin told Anadolu Agency.
“We started our ascent to the summit in the morning. It was very difficult for us to climb from time to time in the stormy weather. We finally reached the summit in a controlled way,” he added.
