British police searching for missing dogs possibly involved in man’s death

Police think missing dogs are not of banned breed but American bulldogs, but cautions public not to approach them

BIRMINGHAM, England (AA) - British police issued an urgent appeal on Thursday to find two dogs that may have been involved in a man's death.

The 33-year-old victim was found dead in the back garden of a property in Rubery, a suburb of Birmingham, the West Midlands, where the dogs are believed to have come from.

“A post mortem is being carried out today to establish his cause of death. At this stage, we are working the belief that he had been attacked by at least one dog, which may have contributed to his death,” the police statement said.

The police announced that two dogs were seized but two others are still at large. Officials released a photo of one of the missing dogs.

“None of the dogs involved is believed to be a banned breed. It is believed the dogs which we are still looking for are American Bulldog-types.”

Inspector Leanne Chapman said the police officers are liaising with vets and the local authority, and are using drone capability to scour the wider area.

“We really need to hear from anyone who has seen these dogs and it’s vital that if you see them, you don’t approach them but call 999 immediately,” she said.

“Similarly, if you or someone you know has taken the dogs in after finding them loose, we need you to call us as soon as possible.”

The police are carrying out house-to-house inquiries, reviewing CCTV, and using specialist dog officers and drone unit to find the dogs.

Birmingham Police Superintendent Sally Simpson said: “This is a really tragic incident, and the family of the man are being supported by officers. The investigation into his death is continuing, and our priority right now is finding the other dogs that we believe may have been involved.”
