British premier defends Israel stance, clashes with Tories over budget
Keir Starmer also welcomes cease-fire in Lebanon, describing it as 'long overdue' and evidence that diplomacy can deliver meaningful outcomes

LONDON (AA) – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Wednesday reaffirmed his government’s support for "Israel’s right to defend itself" amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
During a heated Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) session in the House of Commons, Starmer emphasized the UK's commitment to defending Israel from threats, including those from Iran, and backed the provision of defensive capabilities to the nation.
When asked about the UK supplying weapons to Israel, Starmer responded: "We set out our position on the current law, as he well knows," referring to criticism of his approach.
"I've set out my position very, very clearly concerning the sale of the capability to Israel to defend itself against attacks such as those from Iran, and I'm very clear that we'll continue to do so," he added.
He also welcomed the cease-fire in Lebanon, describing it as "long overdue" and evidence that diplomacy can deliver meaningful outcomes.
In her third PMQ as Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch pressed Starmer on his government's handling of the economy, demanding a commitment to rule out further tax increases.
He avoided the challenge by refusing to outline the next five years of fiscal policy from the dispatch box.
The clash intensified as Badenoch questioned Labour’s plans for businesses, highlighting concerns over job losses and the upcoming ban on petrol cars by 2030.
She accused the government of undermining business confidence with unclear policies and financial burdens.
Starmer defended Labour’s approach, arguing that his government is making "hard decisions" to ensure long-term stability and growth.
"While she’s shouting from the sidelines, we’re getting on with supporting businesses and taking the country forward," he said.
